David Wong - CEO

David joined in March 2010 from BOC Edwards, where he ran the ca. £400m global Vacuum Equipment Division. Has deep experience in advanced technology development targeted at the semiconductor and scientific instrument sectors, and in supplying these demanding, technology-driven customers. This, coupled with his breadth of management and operational experience, brings core expertise to the management team.

Ben Jensen - CTO

Ben's background is in the development of novel reactors used in Nanomaterials growth. Prior to founding SNS he was responsible for developing new technologies used in the hard disk drive industry and in sputter processing. He leads technical development of Vantablack coatings, and is involved with commercial engagement in new technology sectors from defence to luxury goods.

 

David Evans - Chairman

An experienced FTSE Director for 30 years with a record of overseeing exceptional shareholder value growth. An electronics engineer at GEC-Marconi, culminated in heading up the Neston Underwater Systems Division. He was CEO of Chemring plc from 1999 to 2005. During his time at Chemring, annual turnover increased from £21m to £745m establishing itself as an international market leader. In 2007, he joined Avon Rubber plc as Non-Executive Director in May 2007 when the market cap was £10M and was appointed non- Executive Chairman in February 2012 where the current market cap is now £350M. He sits on the Executive committee of ADS, ADS is the Premier Trade Organisation for companies in the UK Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space Sector.

Achim Hoffmann

Achim joined IP Group in 2013 as  Director of Tech. Previously he was  involved in setting up and running start-ups supported by the DTI and the Carbon Trust. He started his career as a chemical engineer developing new technologies and processes for a Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. This was followed by four years as a Strategy Management Consultant with McKinsey & Company, advising mainly industrial clients. He holds a number of board positions as Chairman and NED for IP Group Tech and Cleantech Portfolio companies.

Keith Robson

Responsible for strategic direction of UniSdirect (a University of Surrey unit which works to maximize performance in research, enterprise and knowledge transfer). Before joining UniS, he was Director of Enterprise at Brunel University. Previously had a career in electronic and instrumentation manufacturing, latterly in MD roles. Took one company to a successful trade sale, and set up a spin-out in vision systems - subsequently acquired by Sumitomo.

Simon King

Joined Octopus in 2012 and focuses on early stage deal flow, screening investment opportunities and preliminary due diligence. Has an active interest in businesses focussing on hardware, IoT and machine learning. For Octopus, Simon works closely with Surrey NanoSystems, Origami Energy, Trafi and SmartKem. Previously, he was a researcher investigating novel materials for photovoltaic applications at Imperial College. Simon holds an MA and MSc in Physics and a PhD in Molecular Electronics.

Tim Bullock

Tim is a co-founder of New Wave Ventures LLP and leads its investment activities. He had a successful career in finance, with 14 years as a Managing Director with Lloyds TSB. Although coming from a finance background, Tim is more interested in innovation and the management challenges in business. He aims to spread best practice and ideas among the boards on which he represents New Wave.
