What is VBx?

VBx is a range of super-black coatings for use in visual, architectural, artistic and scientific settings.

Are VBx coatings safe

Are VBx coatings safe

Yes, once applied they do not represent a hazard to human health. The coating is solvent based, so full PPE should be worn at all times during application. Please see the VBx MSDS in the resources section

Can private individuals purchase VBx coatings?

Can private individuals purchase VBx coatings?

No, not at this time due to the coating being classed under EU Directive 2004/42/CE Special Finish Coatings.

Only specialist paint contractors who have undergone application training can purchase VBx 2.

VBx 1 is only supplied through SNS. 

VBx1 is also rated as dual-use by the UK government, so in some cases an export license may be required.

VBx2 does not require an export license.

Please note that you cannot paint VBx paints by brush and they are not a suitable surface to paint on to due to their open structure. They are also not available in a spray can.

Can VBx coating be used outside?

Can VBx coating be used outside?

No, due to the optical cavities being blocked by airborne traffic or wildlife debris, this restricts their application to internal use. 

Please note that the Asif Khan Olympic Pavilion is a temporary structure used to demonstrate the technology.

VBx 1 is currently limited to parts that fit within a working envelop of 410mm x 410mm x 150mm

There is no size limitation for VBx 2 as long as a suitable application environment exists for applying the coating.

How is VBx 2 applied?

VBx 2 is applied using high pressure pumping systems and airless spray technology. Normal spray painting techniques cannot be used whilst spraying as this will prevent the nanostructure being formed correctly.

Who can purchase VBx 2 paint?

VBx 2 is only supplied to specialist paint contractors who have been through an SNS training program. It cannot be sprayed using techniques developed for conventional paints.
